the main 'active' way to avoid spam is to split your incoming mail into multiple addresses, up to one per sender. often you can add a tag (user+tag@host.com) in your address to do just that without the need of another account. so do you have

@CobaltVelvet when it was easier to add more aliases I used aliases but I generally use an unique +suffix.
For email addresses from possibly hostile locations (e.g. Facebook and LinkedIn are good sources of phishing) I tag them so they look different.
(anything)@domain is a catch all with a filter and tagged again
